December 15—Not Your Mother's La Leche League Meeting

What in the world is a Baby Cafe? —A friendly get-together for breastfeeding mothers and babies, and expectant mothers who are interested in breastfeeding. Our regular meeting place is not available in December, so we've found a comfortable, baby-friendly spot—the Tree House in Audubon—to hold an informal discussion of whatever baby-related topics are on your mind.

Note: The Baby Cafe takes the place of our usual monthly meeting for this month only. We will be returning to our usual format and location (First Presbyterian Church in Haddonfield) in January.

In case you're concerned that babies might not be welcome in a coffee shop, Tina from the Treehouse sent this message:
We would love to host you on Monday, Dec. 15th from 7-9pm.  We will have some tasty seasonal eats that night including a veggie quinoa soup, butternut squash wrap, and homemade apple pie. [If they wish, attendees can] ...buy themselves dinner here that night to save themselves the extra step of having to figure out dinner before the meeting.  They are even welcome to call in an order ahead of time if they would like it ready upon their arrival.

What is a La Leche League Meeting?

Share the joys of nursing with other mothers. We offer mother-to-mother support and encouragement as well as providing proven information on breastfeeding, and a forum for exchanging ideas on parenting the nursing baby. Browse through our lending library of books covering topics such as pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, nutrition, and parenting.

La Leche League Philosophy

The basic philosophy of La Leche League is summarized in the following statements:

· Mothering through breastfeeding is the most natural and effective way of understanding and satisfying the needs of the baby.

· Mother and baby need to be together early and often to establish a satisfying relationship and an adequate milk supply.

· In the early years the baby has an intense need to be with his mother, which is as basic as his need for food.

· Breast milk is the superior infant food.

· For the healthy, full-term baby, breast milk is the only food necessary until the baby shows signs of needing solids, about the middle of the first year after birth.

· Ideally the breastfeeding relationship will continue until the baby outgrows the need.

· Alert and active participation by the mother in childbirth is a help in getting breastfeeding off to a good start.

· Breastfeeding is enhanced and the nursing couple sustained by the loving support, help, and companionship of the baby's father. A father's unique relationship with his baby is an important element in the child's development from early infancy.

· Good nutrition means eating a well-balanced and varied diet of foods in as close to their natural state as possible.

· From infancy on, children need loving guidance which reflects acceptance of their capabilities and sensitivity to their feelings.

La Leche League Membership

Both La Leche League International and our local Haddonfield group depend on your support to continue providing the services you depend upon. Your membership helps cover the costs of mailing meeting notices, updating and maintaining the library, and other organizational expenses. If you have been helped by the practical and emotional support of our group, please consider becoming a member. Dues are $40 annually.
